Corpus Christi, Texas - Cayo del Oso Water Line Repair:

In October of 2009, URS Engineers issued a "Request for Statements of Interest" to pipeline technology vendors for potential solutions to a failed HDPE water main in the City of Corpus Christi, TX. The water main served the Texas A&M University Corpus Christi (TAMUCC) on Ward Island which is accessed by a causeway. Upon video inspection it was discovered that the HDPE water main had a failed fusion joint around "the entire circumference of the pipe leaving a gap of 0.25-0.50 inches". Concern over the quality of other HDPE welds necessitated the replacement of the entire 865 foot line. The HDPE water main that failed after being put into service crossed a sensitive marsh area and was inaccessible for a conventional repair (a repair attempt failed as a result of difficulty in stabilization of the excavation site).1

A new line was successfully installed via horizontal directional drilling using a thermally fused PVC pipe material in 2010.2
